Food as Art

Food as Art? Works for me. Evidently it works for lots of folks touring the art galleries of the Golden Triangle the first friday night of each month. How else can you explain the crowd spilling out of the new Rocky Mountain Spice House, 309 W. 11th at Cherokee, during those art walks? Nestled in a Victorian-era row house, this custom spice shop deserves your business. Artful containers and candid owners who won't steer you wrong are two major attractions. Co-owner David Citizen has outdone himself with colorful and eye-catching package designs. The packages were created with an eye toward making the kitchen spice display a real work of art. The hostess and holiday gift possibilities are endless. During a First Friday Golden Triangle Art Walk (5 - 9 pm)you may find a gourmet chef tossing food and spice together for your sampling pleasure. Sometimes the chef is co-owner Cal Smith, but at all times there are some fascinating and artful food presentations. During my last visit Lavender Brownies and Maple Pepper seasonings were tantalizing free treats. In addition to a multitude of spice blends for meats. Colorado Mountain Spice stocks some hard-to-find spices. The search for fresh ground cardamom is over. Hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 10 am to 7 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am to 8 pm and Sundays from noon to 6 pm. Add in a weekly stint at the Colorado Fresh Market in Cherry Creek on Saturday mornings and you know these guys need some sleep!
